‘Prosperity Party’ will help make Ethiopia prosperous, united: Deputy Prime Minister

ADDIS ABABA – Deputy Chairperson of the ruling coalition Demeke Mekonnen said the new ‘Prosperity Party’ will create a prosperous Ethiopia by strengthening national unity and creating a single political and economic community.

At a press conference he held yesterday in relation to the merger of EPRDF and its affiliate parties, Demeke, he is also Deputy Prime Minister, said that the Prosperity Party strives hard to foster national thinking among the people by fostering a sense of multinationalism and national unity.

The new Party will work on things that will help reinforce national unity by leading the reform process with institutionalized approach, changing the current extremist inclinations as well as altering the attitude of undermining diversity in the name of national unity, he underscored.

Saying that the Party will focus on building a strong national attitude, it will make all the efforts to buttress the past best experiences and correct the mistakes.The main goal of the new Party is to detach the country from its current challenges and expedite its journey towards prosperity, Demeke reiterated.

Sustaining multinational federalism, balancing individual and group rights, answering public’s quests through community participation, harmonizing regional identity and national unity, and promoting diversity are the pillars of the new Party, he remarked.

Respecting and preserving the dignity of citizens and the people at large, upholding justice, and national unity are the core values of the Party, the Vice President added. The Party will work with a clear objective of creating a participatory democratic system and bringing an economic development that makes a difference in the lives of every community.

Demeke added that since the misconceptions signaled about the merger will cause conflicts among the people and they need to be corrected. Citing the recent session of Executive Committee of the ruling coalition, he remarked that the fact that TPLF leaders rejected the merger is one of the manifestations of the democratic system.
