ADDIS ABABA – The Ethiopian Roads Authority says that it has accomplished more than 90 percent of the plan in the Second Growth and Transformation plan (GTP 2) within the last four years.
In an Email sent to The Ethiopian Herald, Tewodaje Melkamu, Publication Team Leader at the Authority said that it has performed over 11,000 kilometers roads construction from 12,004 kilometers it’s planed of GTP2.
According to the Team Leader, the stated performance was accomplished through rehabilitating main roads, upgrading levels, improving facilitated roads, constructing new road network, constructing express way, maintaining heavy duty roads, and the like.
The report shows that kilometers of 930, 523, 1756.6, 3236.9, 71, and 4927.3 has performed from the planned, 1180, 544, 2537, 3746, 201, and 3796 in the respective orders of the past four years.
In addition to supervising and helps of road projects, the Authority has taken actions during the past four years which aims to achieving quality roads across the nation. In this regard, an activity like studied has modernization
and transformation; engineering and procurement, designing, construction management, and structuring the staff are taken by the Authority.
The action has played pivotal role to recording and ensuring quality roads in Ethiopia for the near future. As part of this, the Authority has 38 billion birr budget allocated for the remaining roads construction for the coming year while this amount of money expected to reach more than 47 billion birr when funders release finance for the projects. It creates better opportunity to solve financial problems during construction period.
Among the total number of 8,169 total road projects, 181 of them have created job opportunity for close to 55,685 citizens. However, women participation in the job opportunity is smaller compared to men as they covered 15 percent only.
To increase the participation of women in such projects, the Authority discussing with Ministry of Women Children and Youth to staffing experts, Women Directorate, who protect and encourage women to ensure equal participation on job opportunities in the projects, Tewodaj, added.
