Ethiopia earns over three bln Birr

ADDIS ABABA – The Enviro-nment, Forest and Climate Change Commission (EFCCC) announced that Ethiopia has earned 3.23 billion Birr from green incentive payment.

Commission, National REDD+ Program Coordinator Dr. Yitebtu Moges told The Ethiopian Herald the incentive payment will be used for afforestation activities which will be embarking for the next 3 to 4 years to further reduce carbon emission.

He noted that incentive payments are being executed for developing countries that are performing encouraging afforestation and contribute their share to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

He added that due to increased carbon emissions, various complications are being noticed in the planet such as drought, famine. The inconsistency of rainfall, melting of snow, flooding have become frequent occurrence in the world. Ethiopia is working to avert the catastrophe resulted from carbon emission together with stakeholders, he added.

Indicating that Ethiopia has aspired to sell every carbon emitted, the commission called on other stakes mainly industry, agriculture, transport, energy assist the project, he noted.

While protecting the existing 17 million hectares of forest, Ethiopia also intends to undertake large-scale afforestation and reforestation to advance the existing15.5 per cent forest coverage to 30 percent by 2030.

Afforestation and reforestation are also key to alleviating the pressure on natural forests.
