Confederation discusses ways on making upcoming election peaceful, democratic

ADDIS ABABA– Confederation of Ethiopian Labor Unions in collaboration with Africa Solidarity Center prepared a discussion forum aiming at playing a role in making the upcoming National Election peaceful and democratic.

Facilitating free discussions, allowing members to vote for any political party as well as accepting the party that the National Election Board announces as a winner is the major direction that the Confederation put forward.

During the conference, a guideline that states the role of members in the upcoming election was presented by Ayalew Ahmed, Vice President of the Confederation.

A political party that has agendas such as job creation based policy, work and safety insurance, support minimal wage, holds strong economic policy, has national and foreign policy that sustain peace, respect human rights of citizens, and seize human based investment policies are amongst the principles that is formulated by the Confederation to be considered by members during the election.

Kassahun Folo, Confederation’s President said that the major objective of preparing the guidelines is assisting members on how to play roles in the upcoming election to make the election more democratic and peaceful through sensitizing its members to exercise their rights during and post-election.

While preparing free discussion forum for political parties to reflect their manifestos for members, the Confederation plays a significant role in helping them make the right decision during the election, as to the President.

The national and regional awareness raising programs would be prepared in its nine sectoral Labor Unions Industry Federations, said Ayalew.

The Confederation held talks with civic societies, Ethiopian Youth Association, representatives from House of Peoples Representative, and higher officials from Ethiopian Industries Employers’ Confederation, Ethiopian Employers’ Confederation and others.

Confederation of Ethiopian Labor Unions, which is divided by nine sectoral Labor Unions Industry Federations, was established before fifty seven years ago, it was learnt.
