ADDIS ABABA-Rapid technological, citizen-focused initiatives and infrastructure transformation are promising for new businesses in Addis Ababa, a local enterprise said.
This statement was made during a recent visit to project sites, where enterprises observed firsthand the progress and integration of smart technologies in construction and urban planning in the capital.
During the visit, AmeleworkAbebe, cofounder of a growing block manufacturing business, acknowledged the city administration’s efforts toward women-focused development.
She told The Ethiopian Herald that the national ID and resident identification systems being implemented in Addis Ababa are helping to make public services more efficient and transparent.
These technologies foster meaningful developments that empower citizens and communities alike, she noted.
As part of the broader vision of Digital Ethiopia, public institutions are becoming more aligned with modern systems, contributing to a hopeful shift across multiple sectors, she added.
The initiative is especially beneficial for women-led enterprises striving to become more visible and productive in the formal economy.
Amelework operates her block manufacturing business in Addis Ababa’s Nifas Silk-Lafto Sub-City. “We are four women who organized ourselves a few years ago and started with a small capital,” she said, adding that their business has grown steadily and is making a difference. Despite a recent decline in demand, they have continued to supply blocks to housing development projects.
“We are ready to supply to other organizations, not just housing. However, we also need better infrastructure in our working area to fill the gaps,” Amelework explained.
Looking ahead, the enterprise plans to expand into ceramic and terrazzo production, aiming to diversify its offerings and reach a broader market.
Amelework called for improved infrastructure and stronger market linkages, saying, “We can do even more if we get enough inputs, support, and access to new markets.”
