Oromia Champion Games: Unity, talent, progress through sport

AMBO – The 27th All-Oromia Champion Games concluded in Ambo after 15 days of dynamic sports competition and cultural celebration.

Over 8,500 athletes from 22 cities and 21 zones competed in 24 disciplines, making the event one of Ethiopia’s largest regional sports gatherings.

The Games aimed to promote unity, youth development, and regional pride. Oromia state Deputy Chief Administrator Awolu Abdo hailed the event as a platform for building a generation driven by discipline, excellence, and collective achievement.

Shaggar City Administration dominated the competition with 222 medals and 28 trophies. Adama and Bishoftu followed in second and third place. In football, East Arsi Zone emerged victorious in a thrilling final against West Shawa.

Beyond athletics, the event boosted Ambo’s economy and spotlighted Oromo culture through music, dance, and cuisine. A special focus on inclusivity saw greater support for women and para-athletes, alongside a forum on gender equity in sports.

Officials plan to strengthen youth academies, invest in facilities, and build partnerships to elevate Oromia’s sports to national and international levels.

As athletes return home, the Games leave a legacy of unity, talent, and hope—proving sport’s power to inspire and connect communities across the state.
