Tayitu cultural, educational center: New tourist attraction in Addis

The Tayitu Cultural and Educational Center, recently inaugurated in Addis Ababa, stands as a revitalized beacon of Ethiopia’s rich cultural and historical heritage. Its restoration project was led by the Addis Ababa City Administration in collaboration with pertinent stakeholders; the renovated Center has given a new look to Piazza, where the Adwa Victory Memorial Museum is located.

Inaugurating the newly renovated Tayitu Cultural and Educational Center, Mayor Addis Ababa City Mayor Adanech Abiebie stated that efforts to renovate and modernize historical sites in Addis Ababa are well underway with the goal of enhancing the number of visitors and generating considerable amount of revenue from the sector.

The Mayor stated that the City Administration is actively engaged in a comprehensive effort to renovate, modernize, and promote historical landmarks by transforming them into tourism assets thereby raising revenues.

According to her, these endeavors are crucial for preserving historical treasures, integrating them with today’s contexts for future generations and ensuring that their authenticity is maintained and serving as vital educational resources.

In addition, Adanech urged investors to participate in the renovation and promotion activities of heritages in support of the government’s initiative.

The Mayor expressed her sincere appreciation for the exemplary work of Artist Alemtsehay Wedajo, ensuring that the revitalized center will be used for its intended purpose- as a tourist attraction.

She further explained that Addis Ababa is connecting its rich historical past with the present to ensure a lasting legacy for the future. This effort, she stated, that involves renovating and modernizing historical sites to transform them into appealing tourist destinations.

Addis Ababa Culture, Arts and Tourism Bureau Head, Hirut Kassaw on her part stated that the Tayitu Cultural and Educational Center has been renovated with meticulous attention to details to ensuring that its historical integrity is preserved for future generations.

She explained that the City Administration is actively involved in the renovation of historical sites to pass on to posterity.

She also highlighted that the ongoing corridor development projects in the city have significantly contributed to the rejuvenation of these historical landmarks.

On her part Artist Alemtsehay Wedajo, who had a major role in the restoration efforts of the Center, explained that the renovation project was completed within four years and that the Center will showcase a diverse collection of cultural and historical artifacts.

It was revealed that the renovation of the Tayitu Cultural and Educational Center was a collaborative undertaking between the Artist and the City Administration.

The building was formerly the residence of Bitweded Haile Giorgis Wolde Mikael and notably served as the first building of the Addis Ababa municipality.

Moreover, the center will function as a multifaceted space, hosting a diverse collection of cultural and historical artifacts. It will serve as a venue for art exhibitions, poetry readings, and educational programs, fostering cultural literacy and community engagement.
