Mother’s Day: A reflection of unwavering strength, selflessness and unconditional love

Last Sunday, May 11, our cellphone screens were filled with touching images, heartfelt stories, and loving messages in connection with Mother’s Day—a special occasion dedicated to honoring mothers who have devoted their time, energy, and exerted unreserved love to nurturing, supporting, and shaping the future of their children.

Across Addis Ababa, several families marked the day by spending quality family time together in a manner expressing gratitude and love to their mothers, and honoring the vital role mothers play in their children’s lives.

Among these inspiring stories is that of Hanna Alemu, a young woman whose mother` life beautifully exemplifies the true essence of motherhood—strength, selflessness, sacrifice, and unconditional love that continues to inspire.

Hanna was born and grew up in the vibrant neighborhood of Gedam Sefer, a place known for its lively streets and diverse community. As she is the elder daughter of her single mother, Hanna has witnessed firsthand the remarkable strength and determination that define her mother, Ayelech Fekadu, a woman whose love and determination show the power of motherhood.

Ayelech’s journey has been marked by resilience and unwavering commitment to her daughters, even in the face of adversity.

Even though she lost her husband, who was the breadwinner of the family several years ago, and the loss plunged her into a challenging new chapter of her life, she never wavered in raising her daughters with love and dedication.

Her husband, Alemu Tezera worked as security guard at a private firm earning a modest salary. Despite the limited income, he supported not only his immediate family but also extended relatives and the community he cared for. His sudden death, however, left Ayelech with the daunting responsible of raising their daughters on her own.

Even if the condition was backbreaking, Ayelech refused to succumb to despair. She took on multiple roles to ensure her daughters’ well-being and improve their future. She started vending vegetables at a nearby gulit (mini-market), turning her meager earnings into a means of sustenance for her family.

As Hanna stated, there were several moments when life tested her mother’s strength and unwavering dedication. However, through persistence, relentless commitment and hoping for better days to come, she overcame every challenge. Her perseverance and work ethic served as a guiding force for her children, instilling the values of hard work, discipline, and resilience in them.

In fact, the environment where Hanna and her younger sister Meseret grew up was not as such a comfort zone; rather, it was a place where resilience was not just a word; but a way of life. Thus, the surrounding area coupled with their mother’s unwavering sacrifices to raise her daughters, shaped their character and inspired them to pursue their goals despite the obstacles.

With a strong foundation rooted in love, discipline, and respect for their culture, the two siblings excelled academically. However, their success was not solely attributable to their academic achievements; it was also a reflection of their mother’s enduring example and the values she instilled in them. In their spare time, they support their mother by engaging in labor work, helping her with street vending or washing clothes to earn some of money to sustain their livelihood.

This sense of responsibility and mutual assistance became an integral part of their lives, reinforcing the lessons their mother had instilled in them.

In connection with the celebration of Mother’s Day last Sunday, this reporter had the opportunity to speak with Hanna about motherhood, the significance of the day and the strength it embodies.

Hanna said that motherhood is a thing that cannot be expressed in words. It is about everything- selflessness, unconditional love, commitment and a responsibility that transcends any standard or material measure.

“Motherhood is about sacrifice, selflessness, patience, and unconditional love. My mother is a living witness to that. She sacrificed everything—her comfort, her dreams, and her time even her young age- to raise us in a manner respecting the moral, religious and cultural values. We are forever indebted to her for all that she has done and continues to do.”

This sentiment echoes the universal truth that mothers are the backbone of families and communities. Their sacrifices often go unnoticed, yet their influence shapes generations. Mothers like Ayelech exemplify resilience, not only through their personal struggles but also by inspiring their children to become responsible, hardworking citizens.

The celebration of Mother’s Day around the world is more than just giving flowers or cards; it is recognition of the boundless love and sacrifices that mothers pay daily. It is an acknowledgment of their role in fostering moral values, nurturing future leaders, and maintaining the social fabric of their communities.

As Hanna stated, women like Ayelech, should be honored not only on Mothers’ Day; but in each and every day because of their selflessness and unconditional love for their children regardless of any background. The day reminds the importance of showing appreciation and respect to all mothers.

In fact, their contributions extend far beyond the household; they are vital pillars of society, often working tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure the well-being of their families.

Hanna aspires to see her mother lead a happy life, getting relief from the burden of backbreaking labor intensive daily activities. To make this a reality, she is dedicating herself to her education with increased commitment and ambition.

Impressed by her story and wishing her all the best, I took my leave. However, I couldn’t help but ask myself, again and again, how many mothers around the world are living under such harsh conditions.

In Ethiopia, where the majority of households rely on the strength and resilience of women, Mother’s Day serves as a reminder of the need to empower and support mothers through policies, education, and community programs; beyond honoring them annually. Recognizing their efforts is not only a gesture of gratitude but also a step toward building a more equitable society where women’s rights and contributions are valued.

The story of Ayelech and her daughters highlights the importance of community support and the role of collective effort in fostering resilience. Neighborhoods that come together, support each other, and recognize the strength of women create an environment where families can thrive despite challenges. Such stories inspire others to appreciate and uphold the dignity of motherhood.

In conclusion, Mother’s Day is a celebration of the extraordinary women who dedicate their lives to nurturing their children. It is an occasion to honor their sacrifices, acknowledge their strength, and reaffirm our commitment to supporting them. The story of Hanna and her mother reminds us that behind every successful individual is a mother’s unwavering love and sacrifice.

Most importantly, let us carry forward the spirit of appreciation beyond just one day. Let us recognize the countless mothers whose sacrifices often go unnoticed. Their resilience and love are the foundation of a stronger, more compassionate society. As we celebrate Mother’s Day, we have to remember that every mother’s story is a testament to the enduring power of love and the transformative impact of a mother’s sacrifice.
