The overarching objective was clear as it is aimed at ensuring that every African child, regardless of their socioeconomic background or geographic location, has unfettered access to a high-quality education that is not only relevant but also empowered by the transformative potential of innovation.
At the heart of Ethiopia’s commitment lies a deep understanding of the interconnectedness between education, technological advancement, and the cultivation of practical skills. Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen Tiruneh, in his keynote address, eloquently articulated the critical role that these three pillars play in nurturing the next generation of leaders, innovators, and change-makers. Ethiopia seized the opportunity presented by the Innovation Africa 2025 summit to showcase its groundbreaking experiences in education sector reforms and the implementation of forward-thinking policy measures. The nation is resolutely committed to producing competent and competitive citizens who are not only well-versed in technology but also possess the practical skills necessary to thrive in a rapidly evolving global landscape. This ambitious vision is being realized through the implementation of a newly designed curriculum that is meticulously aligned with the demands of the 21st century.
Executive Director of Education Programs and Quality Improvement, Dr. Yohannes Wegaso, provided a comprehensive overview of the reform activities currently underway to fundamentally transform the education sector. He elucidated how Ethiopia has undertaken a comprehensive revision of its education policy, systematically identifying existing problems through a well-defined roadmap and enacting progressive education legislation to ensure that education is accessible to all citizens, regardless of their socioeconomic status or geographic location.

A cornerstone of Ethiopia’s education policy is the commitment to providing free and compulsory education from pre-primary through grade 12. Letting to, overhaul curriculum system timely is equally important. Recognizing that a relevant and up-to-date curriculum is essential for preparing students for the challenges of the 21st century, Ethiopia has embarked on a comprehensive curriculum reform process. This reform focuses on integrating technology into the classroom, fostering critical thinking skills, and developing practical competencies that are in high demand in the modern workforce.
Besides, ensuring conducive Learning Environments is invaluable, too. Ethiopia recognizes that curriculum changes alone are insufficient to guarantee quality education. Therefore, the nation is actively investing in creating conducive learning environments that are safe, stimulating, and supportive. This includes improving school infrastructure, providing access to essential resources, and fostering a culture of learning and innovation.
Next, providing and investing in infrastructure is also the basis. To accommodate the growing student population and provide access to quality education in all regions of the country, Ethiopia has launched an ambitious program to construct new schools and renovate existing facilities. This initiative has resulted in the construction of over 7,000 new schools and the renovation of countless existing schools, representing a significant investment in the future of the nation.
Embarking on food security matters the most, too. Recognizing that hunger can be a major barrier to learning, Ethiopia has implemented a comprehensive school meals program that provides nutritious meals to students in need. Not only does this program improve student health and well-being but it also enhances their ability to concentrate and learn.
Dr. Muluken Nigatu, Executive Director of the Ministry of Education’s Teacher Education Leadership Development Division, further elaborated on Ethiopia’s commitment to enhancing the quality of education by investing in teacher training and leadership development. He highlighted the implementation of various strategies designed to enhance the capacity of teachers and school leaders, recognizing that their expertise and dedication are crucial to the success of any education reform effort.
In particular, Dr. Nigatu emphasized the importance of aligning teacher training programs with the newly revised curriculum. He further noted that over 52,000 teachers and school leaders participated in intensive training programs last winter, focusing on the content and methods of education that they teach. Furthermore, he announced plans to provide technology-supported training to 84,000 teachers in the coming winter, underscoring Ethiopia’s commitment to leveraging technology to enhance the quality of education.
