Flower producers, exporters call for enhanced gov’t support

ADDIS ABABA – Flower producers and exporters in Ethiopia are calling for increased government support to maximize the potential of the country’s flower sector and ensure it contributes more significantly to the national economy.

The Qualirosa PLC International Marketing and Sales Manager Yoseph Abebe told The Ethiopian Herald that the government has already created a favorable environment for the flower and vegetable export industry, including providing cold cargo facilities to maintain the quality of perishable goods.

However, he believes that this support should be strengthened further to unlock the full potential of the sector.

“The flower industry plays a vital role in boosting foreign currency earnings and generating employment,” said Abebe. “With continued government backing, the sector’s overall contribution to the economy can grow substantially.”

Abebe’s company, Qualirosa, produces over 65 varieties of flowers for export and employs over 750 people. It exports flowers to countries such as the Netherlands, the United States, Canada, Germany, and the Middle East, helping to alleviate Ethiopia’s foreign currency shortage.

He also pointed out a key challenge: the shortage of land for expanding flower farms. “If the government can address this issue, more people could be employed in the sector, leading to increased flower exports, a better foreign exchange rate, and attracting more investors to Ethiopia,” Abebe added.

The Elite Agro LLC Ethiopia Representative Kidist Yimer acknowledged the government’s current support, including cargo flights that help reach customers, particularly during peak seasons like Valentine’s Day. She praised the government’s assistance and urged for its continued provision.

The Rainbow Colors PLC Marketing Department Team Leader Tigst Gelaw also highlighted the importance of government support, particularly during tough periods. She pointed to the flower subsector exhibition as a sign of encouragement and called for sustained assistance. Rainbow Colors PLC exports flowers to countries including the Middle East, Italy, South Korea, and the Netherlands, and provides jobs to over 500 people.

Overall, flower producers and exporters are working to address Ethiopia’s foreign currency shortage while creating more employment opportunities. With the continued support of the government, they are optimistic that the sector can make even greater contributions to the nation’s economy.
