Victory of Adwa: A symbol of resilience

As empires expanded across Europe, Asia, and Africa, Ethiopia became a target for numerous invasions. However, the triumph at Adwa in 1896 not only thwarted Italian ambitions but also marked a significant turning point in the fight against European colonialism.

Historians argue that this victory was pivotal in shaping the identity of modern African nations. According to African history a book, the victory of Adwa is not only shows the ability of the country successfully resisted Italian invasion, but also the cultural and political landscapes of today’s African countries would be vastly different. The Battle of Adwa instilled a sense of pride and solidarity among African nations, reinforcing their right to self-determination.

The victory was not just a military success but also a crucial moment that disrupted the plans made during the Berlin Conference, which aimed to divide Africa among European powers. Also the Victory shows to inspire movements for justice and equality across the globe; it remains a testament to the strength and unity of the African spirit.

Recently, Ethiopia has marked the 129th anniversary of Adwa victory under the Theme: ‘Adwa: Victory of Black People.’ In his speech at the event, President Taye Atske Selassie highlighted the significance of the Battle of Adwa, stating that it brought hope and victory not only to Africans but to all Black people around the world.

He emphasized that the victory helped restore the human dignity that colonial powers had tried to destroy. President Taye noted that the Battle of Adwa symbolizes the bravery of Ethiopians, particularly recognizing the important roles women played through their strong participation and political insight.

He explained that the history of Adwa represents the power of knowledge and the importance of ideas. He called on everyone to work together to maintain Ethiopia’s greatness and to effectively tackle issues like poverty.

According to the President, the victory at Adwa is not just a one-time event; it is a powerful link that connects the past, the present, and the future. He mentioned that the spirit of Adwa continues to inspire discussions and ideas. It is not only a military triumph but also a victory born from thoughtful ideas and strong beliefs.

He encouraged the current generation to learn from this history and to work hard for unity and progress in Ethiopia. Taye pointed out that Ethiopians believe in treating all races equally, which forms a strong foundation for unity and courage.

Furthermore, he highlighted that the values of unity, strategic thinking, and forgiveness were evident during the Battle of Adwa and remain important today. The president’s message was clear, by embracing these values, Ethiopians can continue to overcome challenges and achieve success together.

Not only do Ethiopians express the history symbolized by the victory at Adwa, but people living beyond the country’s borders also witness and speak about the significance of this victory. In his parts, Former African Union Commission Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat emphasized the importance of the Battle of Adwa, saying it was more than just a military win. He described it as a victory for African self-determination and the dignity of African people.

He stressed that Adwa showed that Africa can shape its own future without outside interference. Faki Mahamat pointed out that the battle demonstrated how courage and unity can achieve what seems impossible, referencing words from Nelson Mandela.

He explained that the victory at Adwa is significant for all Africans, as it changed the course of Africa’s history and continues to inspire dreams of a united, peaceful, and prosperous continent.

As we remember Adwa, he urged everyone to not only reflect on the past but also to reignite its spirit while facing today’s challenges. This year’s African Union theme focuses on justice for Africans and people of African descent, especially through reparations. He noted that the Battle of Adwa sparked a global call for justice, dignity and reparations for Africans.

He encouraged people to draw strength from this historic victory as they work towards addressing current issues and building a brighter future for all. The lessons from Adwa remind us of the power of unity and the ongoing fight for justice and equality.

During the 38th African Union meeting, Barbados Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley highlighted the significance of learning from history to avoid repeating mistakes. She emphasized the importance of remembering events like the Battle of Adwa and their impact on today and the future.

Mottley noted that the Ethiopian victory over European forces is a key moment in the history of Ethiopia, Africa, and all marginalized groups. She stated that this triumph not only showcases the strength and determination of the Ethiopian people but also serves as a source of hope for communities facing challenges worldwide.

She described the Battle of Adwa as a powerful story of how perseverance can lead to success, representing resilience, unity, and the spirit of those who have endured oppression. Mottley stressed that unity and collaboration are vital for achieving success in any effort.

Furthermore, Diplomats representing various countries in Ethiopia, including China, Cuba, Germany, Israel, Russia, Sri Lanka, the USA, and the UK, extended congratulatory messages to the Ethiopian people in celebration of the 129th anniversary of the Victory of Adwa.

The embassies shared their messages on social media platform X. The Chinese Embassy remarked, “The spirit of Adwa Victory has been passed down for 129 years to Ethiopians and beyond for generations. Throughout history, China and Ethiopia shared courage, unity, and perseverance on our path to modernization. Both countries embraced an even brighter future out of historical struggles!”

The Cuban Embassy emphasized, “We should never ignore where we come from. Adwa is a victory against colonialism and the African symbol of victory. It was in Ethiopia; don’t forget.”

The German Embassy expressed, “The team at the German Embassy wished all Ethiopians a happy 129th Adwa Victory Day!”

Similarly, the Embassy of Israel stated that it “extended its best wishes to the people of Ethiopia on the 129th anniversary of the Victory of Adwa. This historic triumph stood as a powerful symbol of resilience, unity, and national pride, inspiring generations both in Ethiopia and beyond. May this day continue to strengthen the spirit of solidarity and progress for the Ethiopian people.”

The Russian Embassy conveyed, “We wished all Ethiopians a happy anniversary of the Victory of Adwa! Prosperity, realization of all your plans and success!”

The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Ethiopia sent “greetings to all Ethiopians in the homeland and around the world on the occasion of the 129th Anniversary of the Nation’s moment of pride… the Victory of the Battle of Adwa.”

The U.S. Embassy joined in the celebration, stating that it “joined the people of Ethiopia in commemorating the historic Victory of Adwa. This day marked Ethiopia’s triumph over colonial forces at the Battle of Adwa in 1896, a defining moment of resilience, unity, and national pride.”
