Glory to Adwa patriots!

March 1896 was a defining moment in history that Ethiopians achieved a remarkable victory against the invading Italian forces at the Battle of Adwa. The historic battle fought on Ethiopian soil showcased the bravery, resilience, and strategic brilliance of the Ethiopian soldiers who fought against and defeated the invading Italian forces. As we commemorate the anniversary of the Victory of Adwa, it is important to honor the heroic sacrifices paid by the Adwa patriots and the enduring legacy of their triumph.

This historic battle, fought on Ethiopian soil in northern part of the country, marked a pivotal moment in African history as it is the first front an African army defeated a European colonial power. The Ethiopian forces, led by Emperor Menelik II and Empress Taytu Betul, displayed unparalleled bravery, unity, and strategic brilliance in the face of adversity. The victory at Adwa not only secured Ethiopia’s sovereignty and independence but also became a beacon of hope and inspiration for other African nations, igniting the spirit of resistance and self-determination across the continent.

The Adwa patriots, comprised of men and women from all walks of life, came together to defend their homeland from foreign aggression. They displayed unwavering loyalty to their country and fought with a fierce determination to protect their freedom and dignity. Their sacrifice and dedication paved the way for generations to come; instilling a sense of national pride and unity and igniting a sense of solidarity across Africa.

In relation to the commemoration of the anniversary of the historic Battle of Adwa, former President of South African Thabo Mbeki once said that the history of Africa, without referring to the Victory of Adwa, is incomplete. It is the triumph of Africans over colonialism; it is the victory of black people against racism and discrimination, and, most importantly, it is the victory of all mankind against injustice and oppression.

It is the triumph of Africans over colonialism, the victory of all blacks against racism and discrimination and more importantly it is the victory of all mankind over injustice and unfairness.

Ethiopia, through the victory scored at Adwa against invading forces, taught all Africans the critical importance of national unity in the struggle to defeat the common colonial enemy, given the example that had been set as the Ethiopians throughout the Empire united as one people to defend their independence, thus to shed their blood to assert their right to determine their own destiny.

“That victory also underlined the absolute imperative for the Africans to repudiate the demeaning image propagated by imperialist powers which portrayed black people as if they were inferior and barbaric, and therefore the need to assert their human dignity and their equality with all nations. From the victory, everyone can understand the vital importance of a skilled and patriotic leadership capable of outsmarting the enemy not only on the deadly military field of the battle, but also in the challenging areas of politics and diplomacy,” he said.

As to him, in the end the victory at Adwa told all Africans that they were indeed right to call themselves Ethiopians; because it demonstrated practically that the claimed invincibility of the European powers was false, and that a united Africa and Africans could win.

Moreover, the Victory at Adwa was also important for Africans because it helped to die out or weaken the arrogant feelings of superiority of the colonial powers and nations and in turn reinforcing the resolve and confidence of the oppressed Africans.

Next Sunday, March 2, 2025, the Victory of Adwa will be celebrated across the country with vibrant festivities and a deep sense of pride. The commemoration will be marked by colorful events, reflecting the significance of this historic triumph and honoring the bravery and unity of the Ethiopian people.

It teaches all Africans that no matter the challenges faced, they must stand firm in their own beliefs and values and work together towards a common goal. The Adwa patriots showed that even against seemingly insurmountable odds, victory is always possible when one remains steadfast and resolute.

This year’s Adwa Victory commemoration will be observed nationwide and at all locations where Ethiopia’s embassies and consulates are situated. In the capital, Addis Ababa, events will take place at the Statue of Menelik II and the Adwa Victory Memorial Museum, with the participation of government officials, community leaders, foreign ambassadors, and other invited guests, according to the ENDF website.
