ICS rolls out advanced ePassport

–Initiative marks new era in modernized travel

ADDIS ABABA – Ethiopia has officially launched its first electronic passport (ePassport) in a landmark initiative spearheaded by Immigration and Citizenship Services (ICS), in collaboration with Ethiopian Investment Holdings (EIH) and Toppan Security Ethiopia S.C.

This milestone represents a significant step forward in modernizing the country’s travel documentation system.

During the unveiling ceremony, President Taye Atske Selassie presented the first copies of the new passport, describing it as a major achievement in national security, digital transformation, and service efficiency. He emphasized that this innovation marks a leap forward in passport security and streamlining travel procedures.

The president praised the advanced security features of Ethiopia’s new ePassport, stating that it will significantly enhance the country’s international standing and improve its global image.

He also highlighted the importance of local production and printing, which will facilitate easier access to services while ensuring accountability and transparency. This initiative, he noted, reflects Ethiopia’s commitment to modernization in a rapidly digitalizing world.

The new ePassport integrates biometric technology, advanced encryption, and tamper-proof materials, ensuring compliance with international standards while significantly enhancing security. To complement this, ICS has deployed a modernized passport issuance system to streamline the application process and improve service delivery for Ethiopian citizens.

ICS Director General Selamawit Dawit hailed the ePassport as a game-changer for Ethiopia’s immigration services. “With enhanced security, faster processing, and internationally recognized standards, this passport will significantly improve the travel experience for Ethiopians while strengthening our global recognition and border control,” she stated.

Ethiopian Investment Holdings CEO Brook Taye (PhD) underscored the strategic significance of this project. “The launch of Ethiopia’s first ePassport is a testament to our commitment to advancing strategic national projects that drive modernization and efficiency. By partnering with Toppan Security and ICS, we are not only addressing the security printing gap but also positioning Ethiopia as a leader in secure document production. This is one of the most important strategic investments to date, and we look forward to engaging with investors to solidify Ethiopia’s position as Africa’s Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) gateway.”

Toppan Security Ethiopia S.C. CEO Kalkidan Arega emphasized the role of technology and expertise in enhancing security and efficiency in public services.

“The Ethiopian ePassport is the result of knowledge transfer, cutting-edge innovation, and a shared vision for a more secure and seamless travel experience. This project demonstrates how collaboration and advanced technology can elevate national services to global standards,” she stated.

With this milestone, Ethiopia has taken a significant step toward digital transformation, reinforcing its commitment to secure and efficient public services while enhancing the ease of travel for its citizens.
