Holy Trinity Cathedral restoration key to boosting capital’s tourism: EOTC

ADDIS ABABA – The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church (EOTC) has announced the successful completion of the renovation of the Holy Trinity Cathedral, a two-year-and-four-month project that prioritized preserving the church’s historical value and essence.

According to Administrator of the Holy Trinity Cathedral Aba Sirak Admasu, the renovation was carried out by internationally renowned contractor Varnero Construction. Following 18 months of meticulous surveying, the project focused on safeguarding manuscripts, artifacts, and other historical items, with an expected lifespan of over 80 years.

The Holy Trinity Cathedral Renovation and Development Committee Member Priest Biruk Walelign explained that the cathedral’s cornerstone was laid in 1932 but construction was halted by the Italian invasion in 1936. Construction resumed in 1941 and was completed in 1944. The church will celebrate its 81st anniversary on February 15, 2025.

Biruk emphasized that the restoration meticulously adhered to the church’s original design and characteristics, ensuring that the renovations reflected the aesthetic of the initial construction. Damaged artifacts were restored, and aged items were cleaned while preserving their original colors and contents.

He further highlighted the significance of historical sites like the Holy Trinity Cathedral, which houses the tombs of notable figures in Ethiopian history, in attracting international tourists. Preserving this heritage for future generations is a shared responsibility.

From the Authority for Research and Conservation of Cultural Heritage architect Fikre-sillassie Sifir acknowledged the challenges faced during the restoration, particularly in restoring the copper cross and maintaining the wall paintings. However, these challenges were overcome without compromising the church’s historical significance.

The administrator confirmed the successful completion of the Holy Trinity Cathedral’s restoration, stating that all maintenance work was conducted to uphold the church’s value. The inaugural ceremony is eagerly awaited.

Built by His Imperial Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie to serve as the Orthodox metropolitan Cathedral of the City of Addis Ababa, it serves as a monument to those who gave their lives to preserve Ethiopia’s sovereignty during the Fascist occupation, and beyond, it was learnt.
