ADDIS ABABA – The Ministry of Innovation and Technology (MinT) has emphasized the need for collective efforts to harness the transformative potential of the Internet and Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the digital age.
The 13th African Internet Governance Forum (AfIGF) is underway at the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UN-ECA) in Ethiopia, under the theme “Building our Multi-stakeholder Digital Future.” Speaking at the forum’s opening, Minister of Innovation and Technology, Belete Molla (PhD), stressed the importance of collaboration in navigating the complexities of the digital age.
“It is essential to work together to harness the power of the Internet to address its challenges and unlock its transformative potential,” he stated.
The Minister urged African nations to strengthen affordable and reliable internet connectivity, promote digital literacy, empower individuals and businesses in the digital economy, and enhance cyber security and data protection to ensure inclusive growth in the sector.
Recalling Ethiopia’s successful hosting of the International Internet Governance Forum (IGF) in 2022, Belete expressed optimism about achieving a bright and inclusive digital future. He emphasized that such a future could be realized through Pan-African cooperation and unity.
State Minister of MinT, Yishirun Alemayehu, highlighted Ethiopia’s focused efforts on Artificial Intelligence (AI), urging African nations to prioritize AI development. “The work being done in Ethiopia on Artificial Intelligence is encouraging and promising. We need to intensify our focus and work in this area,” he said.
Yishirun underscored the importance of evaluating digital inclusion in Africa and addressing challenges in ensuring equitable access to AI technologies. He noted that AI could be a transformative tool in tackling Africa’s unique socio-economic challenges, particularly in sectors like education, health, agriculture, and finance.
The State Minister called for ongoing efforts to integrate AI-based solutions to drive Africa’s digital transformation, emphasizing the need for sustainable and inclusive digital progress.
As the forum continues, participants are expected to discuss strategies to leverage the Internet and AI for Africa’s socio-economic development, fostering a collaborative vision for the continent’s digital future.
