تتألف صناعة الأدوية  و الرعاية الصحية الإثيوبية المحلية من 22 من موردي  ومصنعي الأدوية ، مع 9 معنيين بشكل مباشر في تصنيع المنتجات الصيدلانية.

ويعمل معظم المصنّعين بأقل من طاقتهم ولا يزودون سوى حوالي 20٪ من السوق المحلي.

وفي عام 2014 ، قامت شركات الأدوية المحلية بتوريد منتجات بقيمة 44.2 مليون دولار أمريكي.

ويمتلك المصنعون المحليون منتجات محدودة ويعتقد أنهم قادرون على توفير 90 فقط من أكثر من 380 منتجًا في قائمة الأدوية الأساسية الوطنية.

وتتنوع ملكية الشركات وتتراوح من شركتين كبيرتين إلى كيانات أصغر هي مشاريع مشتركة بين رواد أعمال إثيوبيين ومستثمرين أجانب من الصين والهند والأردن والمملكة العربية السعودية والسودان والإمارات العربية المتحدة.

وتعتبر شركة الخليج للصناعات الدوائية “جلفار”، التي افتتحت مصنعا لها في اثيوبيا عام 2013 إحدى أكبر الشركات المصنعة للأدوية في الشرق الأوسط وأفريقيا.

ويقع مصنع (جلفار أثيوبيا) الذي بلغت كلفة انشائه 10 ملايين دولار في العاصمة الأثيوبية (أديس أبابا) على مساحة 4 الاف متر مربع وتم تصميمه وفق تقنية عصرية تعد أحدث ما تم التوصل اليه لانتاج المستحضرات الملائمة لقوانين الصناعة الدوائية العالمية.

وفي مقابلة حصرية مع صحيفة العلم قال المدير القطري لشركة الخليج للصناعات الدوائية في اثيوبيا خضر شريف ان الشركة توفر فرص عمل لحوالي 140 مواطنا اثيوبيا في الوقت الحالي.

واضاف ان مصنع الشركة في مدينة عدي قرات في اقليم تجراي كان يوفر فرص عمل لحوالي 600 مواطن لكنه توقف بسبب الحرب.

واشار الي ان المصنع ينتج الأقراص، والمضادات، والاشربة ، والكبسولات، والمراهم ويبيعها باسعار مناسبة للمواطنين.

واضاف ان المصنع يقوم حاليا بتغطية السوق المحلي فقط  وينتج 20%  من طاقته الانتاجية بسبب النقص في المدخلات والعملة الاجنبية .

وقال ان الشركة خصصت حوالي 120 مليون بر اثيوبي للبدء في المرحلة الاولي من مشروع بناء مصنع لانتاج الانسولين والذي يعتبر الاول من نوعه في افريقيا.

واشار الي انه اذا تم تصدير الانسولين الي الخارج سيستطيع المصنع من الحصول على العملة الاجنبية وتوسعة اعماله بشكل اكبر.

وقال ان المصنع سيخلق فرصة لإثيوبيا لتصدير الأنسولين إلى دول أفريقية أخرى ، إلى جانب تلبية الطلب المحلي وان الشركة لديها خطة لبدء انتاج  الانسولين بعد عامين ونصف.

واضاف ان جلفار حققت من خلال الاستثمار في الابتكار والتكنولوجيا، نجاحاً رائداً في مجال التصنيع الدوائي لتصبح أحد أكبر مصنعي الأنسولين في العالم، بفضل منشأتها للتكنولوجيا الحيوية المتطورة والفريدة من نوعها في الإمارات.

و هناك ما يقرب من 200 مستورد للمنتجات الصيدلانية والمواد الاستهلاكية الطبية في إثيوبيا و يتزايد الوعي بالأمراض وتشخيصها وعلاجها لكل من الأمراض المعدية وغير المعدية في إثيوبيا وتشير التقديرات إلى أن أكثر من 50000 شخص يسافرون كل عام لتلقي العلاج الطبي في الخارج.

وتقدم إثيوبيا فرصة استثمارية كبيرة لشركات الأدوية الأجنبية و يعد إنتاج منتجات صيدلانية عالية الجودة وتنافسية للتصدير والسوق المحلي أحد مجالات التركيز الرئيسية للتصنيع في خطة التنمية المستقبلية الحكومية الجديدة العشرية 2021 – 2030.
